This term from French literally means "glass plate". The technique was developed in the 1840s by William Fox Talbot and was most popular at the turn of the 1870s. The first experience of the inventor of this technique, based on the photogenic drawing method, consisted in obtaining a negative image from an object covering photosensitive paper. Many outstanding French (and not only) artists and painters used the cliché-verre technique. The cliché-verre technique can be divided into two distinct stages. The first is to cover the glass plate (or other transparent material) with an opaque preparation, collodium, and by spraying lead white ink or pigment. On such prepared material, a drawing is created with the use of a sharp tool, eg a needle, etc. The next step is to expose the plate together with photosensitive paper.
