However I understand that some cases like shadows hierarchize the elements and make navigation easier. Personally , I would advocate a mixture of the two , in which we take the improvements that material design can bring to the flat. If you are not convinced by animations and you are not going to use them in your design, the normal thing is that you are closer to a flat design. If, on the other hand, you would like to include them, you must include the material.
